Electronic health records monolith Extormity today announced the launch of a PACS module to its expanding line of healthcare IT offerings. "Like most of our innovations, this one was developed by a programmer we insulate from the unrealistic expectations of our customer base," explained Extormity CMO Dr. Sonny Bartram. "Larry, one of the few code writers whose job we have not offshored, came up with a new unit of data storage he calls a Larrabyte. While getting images in and out of our system takes forever, a single Larrabyte PACS can store a whole mess of x-rays, CT scans, MRI studies and even family vacation photos." The new Extormity PACS even allows images to be viewed over the internet. DICOM images are compressed using a patented freeze drying process, which actually improves image resolution by removing moisture. Freeze dried images are sent over the Web and reanimated at the client site with the aid of a downloadable hydrating viewer that attaches to any garden hose. Extormity has also engineered its PACS module to improve read quality, based on the Extormity Intentional Slowness philosophy. "We noticed that when images are instantly available, radiologists tend to hurry through their reads – zipping through multi-slice CTs much faster than our software can deliver them," said Bartram. "I don't know if this affects diagnostic quality, but it certainly makes us look bad. Our one-slice-at-a-time approach synchronizes image viewing with the time it takes to brown a piece of bread in a Hamilton Beach toaster set on 7." "Of course, the Extormity PACS will be fully integrated with the rest of the Extormity EHR platform, in that we bill our clients for it on the same invoice," added Bartram.
